Re: dishwasher loading: My spatial skills are very poor: about 30th percentile on the last test I took (I admit to laughing at how hopelessly bad I was trying to rotate shapes in my mind.) This is to say I do load the dishwasher but unless it's a very small load, my wife will always correct it.
I replied to the restack (thank you!), expecting my reply to appear here but I guess that’s not how it works 🤷🏼♀️. Baldy says he had to take over the duty from me entirely because he spent more time fixing my “mistakes” than he would just loading it himself 🤦🏼♀️🤣
It’s a skill, a real skill 😅’tis one I am yet to learn or more likely forever not understand 😆🙃 interestingly, my boyf refuses to buy more crockery and cutlery to warrant filling a dishwasher so I am the washer upper - both at his home and mine (where there is no dishwasher and the washing machine lives outside)
oh my goodness i want to run your dishwasher half-full, i want that so bad. experts say it's not a waste of water!! i promise. (when i had a dishwasher I could only reach the top of it anyway, because leaning over is terrible, so i ran it half-full all the time. it is an acceptable life choice and i would support you if you did this.)
Ha ha that’s good to know because i remember once reading that the dishwasher uses less water than washing up so i can believe that. I’ll see if he can be converted - he has 2 boxes of dishwasher tablets😆
Sounds like you safely shepherded Zira (someone you love) through the critical stages of her recovery. Time to prioritize you and your "recovery" (and you recognize that).
Thanks for sharing Kim's video/message.
I have struggled for 30 years (as of 4/15/24) with reconciling who I was the day before I got sick and who I can be now. I'm so much more valuable to the world now than I was then (and that helps). Oh well.
Thanks for saying all this, Shayne. I think as long as we are moving toward growth, we can’t be faulted too much for not being who we wanted to yesterday or 30 years ago. We are products of our environments, upbringing, and society, after all.
Some days just being has to be enough and it is. It's my hope that all Post Infectious disease patients can appreciate their being. Even the patients I probably would have despised before they got sick. I wouldn't wish this on anyone but - Hope. Life. Love.
Hiiiiii i loved your post. I am shocked at the level of punctuation and use of capital letters in such times. Do you ever use disposable bowls and "cutlery" when it's dire? We don't have a dishwasher, so I definitely use the disposables when spoons are low literally and figuratively, especially when the other human who could wash dishes is away. YOU DID NOT ASK FOR ADVICE so I hope that suggestion doesn't feel like a jerk. When we did have a dishwasher, for the record, I was the Scandinavian architect and I only ceded dishwashing once I got LC. ALSO: I love the toast collar on the kitten. My cat does not use a fluffy collar but one of my LC-besties usually has toasty collars on her cat-- though lately she's been putting him in a watermelon collar for Palestine solidarity. I want her to submit the cat for consideration on the IG channel "ceasfire meow", which I mention because you probably need more cat visuals if you're a flare bear. xo, a near stranger.
Ceasefire meow sounds right up my alley - thanks for telling me about it! And I’m glad you enjoyed this post. I wasn’t sure a “non-post” from me would get much traction, so it’s nice to see people at least hit a chuckle.
I can’t bear the thought of using plastic cutlery when I don’t really need to (if I’m in a real bind, I do it, but this week wasn’t that). Besides, when Baldy is here (and he always is, minus the two weeks a year he visits his parents and sometimes I’m with him for that), we create enough dirty dishes between us to run the dishwasher before running out of spoons. He’s home now so I’m looking forward to having all the cutlery I need ;)
Not sure what your comment on punctuation and capitalization is referring to? Do you mean because I’m flaring? (A flare bear - love that 🤭)
hiiii i put this in a "reply to" folder! yes i meant because you're flaring, punctuation and capitalization feel like extra work to me and i feel that you get bonus points if you do them when you're flaring. slash also want to validate your choice to not do them if they're not on the menu for you! :) oh i just wrote a post about flaring that includes a mention of disposable plates :) https://couchcrafts.wordpress.com/2024/04/19/things-i-do-when-i-flare/
I see - thanks for circling back. I love that you have a “reply to” folder! Good idea. I would struggle to hit publish if I couldn’t use punctuation and capitalization. I know that’s internalized ableism, but some traits die hard. I’ll check out your post - thanks!
ooooh collab idea: what things to people with acquired or progressive disabilities/illness ....let go of? like, i had to let go of washing the dishes myself the "right" way, and i've let go of punctuation, but i haven't let go of composting and recycling...there's no one right answer but it would be interesting to see all the various things people do and don't let go of! you know? also super super grateful for your most recent "part 1" roundup of healing modalities and recovery strategies and etc. i've shared it with the support squad for my friend who has "newer" longcovid -- six months along.
Woww I'm flattered, thank you! Oh I can see that I'm feeling better than last week because I seem to be punctuating, interesting.
I love the idea of this but I'm not sure about how I feel about writing on Substack -- you know about the whole profiting-off-Nazis thing? this: https://thecrankyqueer.substack.com/p/substackers-against-nazis and this: https://mashable.com/article/substack-writers-leaving-misinformation -- so I have to mull on that. But I'd be delighted to figure out a way to collab that would work for both of us. (I can't remember if I mentioned I'm a nurse practitioner? I do feel like we have a lot of overlap and a lot to discuss as patient-providers!)
I'm noticing my brain is reaching its limits a bit quicker these days, as the effects from Covid Infection #2 take root. So I dig out the bag of tricks I put together last time to see me through.
And the dishwasher! The silver lining to it being out of commission is that I don't have to discuss (argue) with my husband about how to best load it! We each have our own ideas...🙄
I would have loved to have one of those toast collars for my little girl cat following her spay. She was not home with Ye Olde Cone of Shame on for five minutes before she was whacking it against every door and wall to try to remove it. I took it off of her so she wouldn't concuss herself - and she wound up all but ignoring her little glued together suture.
We had a cat who perfected the art of slamming the hard cone into the corner where two walls meet and the snaps would give and he’d be free. I guess necessity is really the mother of invention, even for cats 😹.
I hope your bag o’ brain fog tricks works again for you. I’d love to know them, if you’d like to share.
Here, you can get compostable dishes and cutlery — you could get some for “emergencies.”
Speaking of playing the disability card (see my reply to David Roberts's comment), I used to play it pretty regularly back in the day when it came to recycling. Before I had significant help with all household chores, getting my recycling sorted, separated, and down the stairs was a spoon too far for me. Now, with my cleaning lady + my own saintly husband, I am ecologically a solid B.
Now that your Florence Nightingale-like nursing skills have paid off with the return to health of the Holy Toast, it is time to chillax. Binge-watch something trashy but satisfying (so trashy that if you fall asleep and miss a couple of episodes, you won't even care.)
My parents somehow manage to load the dishwasher and fit what always seems like an unreasonable amount of dishes in there, yet it works. I just end up staring at when it gets to a certain point and giving up lol. Someday maybe that'll be in my skill set. Sorry this was a tough/draining week but thank you for blessing us with a photo of the toast collar. I think many of us can say that made our weekend 😊
Some things are just not worth thinking too much about, right? Dishwasher loading is not the hill I need to die on 😁.
I’m sorry that you too had a rough week, Jackie. May the pendulum swing (or at least, gently sway) in the other direction for both of us real soon 🤞🏻. I’m glad Bitchy Cat helped a little.
We had a cat once who was a master at finding the corner of a wall and banging the hard collar into it until the snaps came loose. Thats when we got smart and started going with soft collars. We have about six different kinds, including a giant chocolate frosted donut and one that makes the cat look like a daisy 🌼🤭.
I am usually fairly introspective and can take a bit of criticism, but I don’t think I’m as bad at dishwasher loading as Baldy thinks I am. Plenty of the dishes in his loads still come out crusty or dirty! Grrr…these men. He still is incapable of moving a jar of sauce out of the way to find the ketchup that I told him was absolutely there. “It’s not, I looked.” And then I go and voila! It magically appears 🙄
The toast collar... I can't. HAHAHA!
it’s a hoot, right? she came onto my bed just now and I told Baldy I was having breakfast in bed 🤣

yes exactly, it uses less water! and also as a bonus bit of logic: life is hard enough. good luck!!
Oh sure, play the disability card! I see you David Roberts! (jk!)
Teri! 😂😂

I love this collab idea! LMK if you want to commandeer my newsletter for just such a post. Like, a guest post? No punctuation required 😬

The Holy Toast 😂😂. You kill me, Teri!
I am still so bad at chillaxing. I need to work on that.
😻

Love your posts, good to read your meow 🐈⬛ is doing better. Enjoy the eclipse tomorrow!!
Thank you for reading and commenting!
I’m impressed you found a cat collar that is up to the task. My cats always free themselves of the collar somehow like feline Houdinis. 🐈⬛🐈⬛

THE TOAST COLLAR 😂😭😂😭 I am the raccoon on meth loading the dishwasher one in my relationship 💁🏻♀️😍😂 Yay us!
Trash pandas unite! 🦝
Zira you are the luckiest egg in hole of all time!!!
I hate the way my husband loads the dish rack it’s so precarious and unsettling
She is indeed one lucky egg!

dont EVEN get me started on male selective blindness 😂
